NIMH: Subterranean Thoughts (CD 2005 - Silentes)

Indomito perpetuare del pensiero. L'incarnazione solista di Giuseppe Verticchio nelle vesti di Nimh vanta una corposa lista di titoli. "Subterranean Thoughts" esce nel 2005 per Silentes e ci presenta l'artista romano alle prese con un approccio più sperimentale rispetto alle produzioni più recenti - Hall Of Mirrors e Amon/Nimh - che ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare e recensire. Una sorpresa la chitarra che governa la struttura della title track, inquietante nella sua accordatura "più bassa dell'inferno". Un accordo stridente, pieno e magmatico che sembra vomitato fuori da un disco dei Kyuss; stessa cosa per l'intrusione tribale a metà brano in "Perpetual Cycles" quando percussioni s'innestano nel drone impreziosendo la trama ambient di fondo; "The Liquid Dream", invece, sembra nascere dall'amore per i Pink Floyd e per la psichedelia settantiana e fluttua su frequenze leggere ma con un passo maestoso che sa di epico. Etereo, cinematico come in "Recovered Memories" che dà vita ad una vecchia cinepresa che fa girare rulli con filmati sbiaditi ripresi durante l'infanzia. Un diario di famiglia che nasconde anche un peso dentro al cuore che non si riesce ad esorcizzare; la fase armonica posta sul finale di "Back To Laudomia" spezza un tormento ossessivo e strugge dolcemente. "Subterranean Thoughts" è un lavoro con una valenza introspettiva ed allo stesso tempo cosmica, figlio di una concezione del tempo e dello spazio intesi rispettivamente come cammino della memoria e sede del pensiero. Un altro disco intrigante, profondo, che sa lanciare uno sguardo oltre il genere e farsi custode di tanti piccoli segreti e visioni che non aspettano altro che essere condivisi ed interpretati.

“Subterranean Thoughts” is an extremely intriguing experimental electronic album that finds the perfect equation between aesthetic of enlightenment and the production of cinematic sound textures. “Subterranean Thoughts” is a ravishing immersive experience, conjugating concrete elements with well established electronic treatments. “Rewind” is a dreamy-like, detached piece that dissolves tonal violinist stringed orchestration into a vast electronic abstract path (an obvious contrast between decadent industrial noises and clestial rains). This is substantial religious, introspective music. “Recovered Memories” is a mysteriously luminous, composite piece featuring concrete sounds enveloped in a discreet, moving electronic veil. This is a fantastic obstinate research to find images, sensations and impressions in the antique mysteries and in the secrets of the humane nature. Without any transition we are transported in the archaeological torment of “Back to Laudomia”, which explores the heart of human being in front of the revelation of nothingness. We meet large drone sequences, continuous sound forms, suggesting eternity beyond time and mortality. It ends with a supreme minimalist melody that disappears in a deep silence. “Perpetual Cycles” is an other strange but haunted emanation combining concrete sounds with passion and enchantment. “Subterranean Thoughts” is a cavernous lugubrious piece featuring doom-like, looped e-guitar impulsions. “The Liquid Dreams” figures in one of the most beautiful, cosmical-inflected composition written by Nimh. Abrasive, burgeoning tellurian drones covers a sumptuously serene, minimalist organic melody. The album ends with a languorous, poetical, cloudy piano prelude. Giuseppe Verticchio improvises magic universes where the absolute meets the fiction and the reality. A hermetic, ecstatic collection of indeterminate electronic constellations.

Nimh in "Subterranean Thoughts" testimonia il suo notevole eclettismo, passando dai registri ambientali sporcati da field recordings di "Recovered Memories" alle Lustmordiane inquietudini di "Back to Laudomia", dalla congiunzione di respiri concreti e stralci rituali di "Perpetual Cycles" all'incedere meccanico di "Subterranean Thoughts".

Nimh's "Subterrean Thoughts" sees Verticchio's synth-based ambient in its more sombre vein, already explored in works like "Line of Fire" and "The Impossible Days". I wouldn't exactly call it "dark ambient", but the Roman musician surely prefers tension to relaxing atmospheres. To his usual array of instruments (synths, keyboards, ethnic samples, field recordings, etc.) he now adds recognizable guitar lines in "Subterrean Thoughts", a melody which also closes the CD in a piano reprise. I venture Nimh is going through a process of change and experimentation, as there are many different inputs in these tracks that could be explored further.

If you checked out Francesco Paladino and Opium's CD and enjoyed what you heard, this could well be one for you as well. Silentes Minimal Editions is the offshoot of the main label and comes with a slightly darker and edgier sound. The pieces on off here range from soothing isolationist ambient through to a slightly more analogue driven electronic sound, via one heavier guitar based piece. Excellent stuff as always from this superb label.
